Frequently Asked Questions
Take a look at our 'Frequently Asked Questions' for answers to some questions you may have regarding your participation in our research. Can't find your answer? Feel free to contact your CANPWR team (see the 'Contact Info' tab).

01
Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my visit?
-
You only need to prepare if your visit involves bloodwork - you will be reminded of this before your visit.
-
We ask that the participant please fast since midnight (no food, drink water only) the night prior to the blood work visit
-
Drink LOTS of water! This will make the blood work much easier.
-
We can schedule these visits early in the morning so you won't need to go as long without eating
-
02
Am I part of CANPWR if I stop visiting the clinic?
-
YES!
-
We would still love to have you as part of our study!
-
We can continue to arrange study visits, and can complete questionnaires over the phone
03
My child is turning 18 soon and will switch to an adult clinic. Can we participate?
-
Of course - we are interested in all patients that come through the clinic
-
Our study follows participants for 3 years, regardless of their age at the end of the study
04
Will you release my name or information?
-
All personal identifying information (name, address, contact info etc.) will be removed before the study data is entered into the dataset.
-
The data from each participant is associated with an ID number, not a name. The data and ID number are kept separate from any identifying information
05
Will I be hurt if I am in the study? Are there any potential harms?
-
There are NO invasive procedures as part of the study.
-
If your CANPWR site is collecting bloodwork and you are no longer enrolled in the clinic program, we will still request a blood sample for our study, and that might hurt a little
06
What happens after the study?
-
When we are finished this study we will write a report about what was learned
-
This report will not include your name or that you were in the study
-
We will use this report to help us help other children beginning weight management programs and other clinics around the world!
07
I don't want to do blood work. Can I still participate in the study?
-
A number of CANPWR sites are collecting blood work to measure specific predictors of heart disease later in life. While this information is very important to our work, you are welcome to opt out of this component if you have challenges with blood work
-
If you already require bloodwork from the weight management clinic, we would be happy to coordinate with the clinicians so that only one bloodwork session is required
-
The clinics require a blood test now and then to help with your child's care. We are happy to coordinate study blood collections with that.
08
Will my participation change the care I get at the clinic?
-
NO - whether or not you participate in the study will NOT influence the care you receive at the clinic
-
Although we recruit families in the weight management clinic, the study is not affiliated with the clinic itself
