To our new and current participants...

A Few Reminders:
  • Please make sure you update us with any phone number or address changes

  • Your participation continues whether or not you are still enrolled in the clinic

    • We would still love to have you as part of the study!

  • Can't make weekday appointments?

    • We have some Saturday morning clinic days available to accommodate busy weekday schedules!

Study Components:

  • Weight management registry

    • This involves a baseline questionnaire and follow-up questionnaires at 6 months and then annually at 1, 2 and 3 years

    • These questionnaires help us understand how they are doing in reaching their goals in the weight management program

  • Fasting blood work and DNA sample (for sub-study participants)

    • We are collecting blood samples in order to test for specific markers of some health conditions that occur later in life

    • The DNA sample will be used only to test for specific genes that we think are related to the development of cardiovascular or metabolic conditions

  • cIMT (for sub-study participants)

    • We are using an ultrasound machine to measure the thickness of a blood vessel in the neck, called the carotid artery. We want to find out if this thickness can predict atherosclerosis (when your blood vessels harden and thicken) later in life

    • Ultrasound uses harmless sound waves to make a real-time image of the blood vessel. Kids love to see their own circulatory system in motion on the screen!

McMaster CANPWR Participants

Updates from the McMaster-CANPWR Team:

  • 2-year participant visits are underway! Many thanks to our devoted and helpful participants!

  • McMaster is the largest CANPWR site in Canada. We have more participants than the 8 other locations combined!

McMaster FAQs:

I don't remember hearing anything about blood work, DNA or cIMT ultrasound. Do I have to do this, too?
  • This portion of the study is slightly newer, beginnning in October of 2014. If you were recruited before this change was implemented, you would not have been asked about it.

Why do you need my DNA and blood sample?
  • A CANPWR sub-study at the McMaster site aims to study the development of some health conditions like atherosclerosis, which is hardening of arteries. We want to see how this changes in children in our program. And we use an ultrasound to do this!

  • We are using DNA and blood work only to look at things specifically related to these conditions - no other information will be collected or stored. Our information will be kept with a non-identifying ID number to ensure your confidentiality
